April 01, 2009

Greetings from Afghanistan.

I hope this finds you and all your volunteers and supporters well. I
apologize for not getting back to you, thanking your folks for the
recent arrivals of goodies over here. They are amazing.

It has been hectic here.  You likely heard that two Sailors were killed
in attacks over here. They were our Sailors, it was my honor to have
known both of them. I met LT C*** during my travels to the North and I
trained with LTJG T**** in Kansas.  Both wonderful people, spouses and
heroes.  I’ve attached a draft of the program for our memorial here. The
support of the other services and our Allies has been overwhelming. The
Germans at the base near Mazar-e Sharif where the bodies were taken to
following the attack were amazing. They lined the roads with torches in
hand at 5 AM as the bodies were driven to the flight line for transit to
Bagram.  At Bagram 3000 - 4000 military lined the road as the caissons
took the flag draped coffins to the C-17 as about 300 stood by at the
aircraft as escorts to honor our Sailors.  I followed the caskets into
the aircraft.  Hopefully, the last time I will need to do that. That was
last Saturday. Since then I have been up North with my Sailors where we
held a formal memorial.  We are now preparing for a last memorial here
for their shipmates in the Kabul area.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Don
