troop letter: Thanks!
September 11, 2008
Bob,
If you have any teachers who are interested in having their kids bring in care package items for your holiday shipment, but can’t get their kids motivated to bring things in, I would be happy to share my new lesson with them.
This year I am offering extra credit for items, but have actually typed up an academic assignment that ties in perfectly, so I can justify what they are doing. I’ll attach it if you want to forward it to anyone so they can tweak it to fit their kids ability levels, grades, etc. I’ll be in touch!
Tiffany Extra Credit Opportunity-Due October 10
In an effort to celebrate our freedom as Americans, it is important that we understand the sacrifices people make to ensure that our freedoms are upheld, as well as what those freedoms are that we do have. This assignment will address these issues in two parts (must participate in both parts for credit).
Part 1 (30 points): Turn in a typed 2 page paper that answers the following two questions in your own words:
1. What does freedom mean to you?
2. What freedoms do we have as Americans that other people around the world lack? Give examples from other countries/cultures. Cite your references!!!
Part 2: (3 points per index card): American troops overseas are greatly appreciative of receiving care packages with their favorite foods and entertainment items. For every boxed/bagged item brought in (individual items will not count for credit…example: one piece of candy vs. one bag of candy) attach an index card including the following information:
· Your name
· Your class period
· Name of item (in case index card is misplaced)
· The name of an American troop who has died protecting American freedom.
· The war that troop died fighting in.
· Birth year/death date.
· How they died.
· Where they lived.
· Any surviving family members left behind?
Please attach your index card in a manner that will be easy to detach! We will be sorting through these items to create care packages to ship to troops serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kyrgyzstan this holiday season.
The following items are needed:
· Granola bars
· Cereal bars
· Pop tarts
· Candy (nothing that will melt)
· Powdered drink mixes (crystal light, etc.) for water bottles
· Hot chocolate
· Disposable cameras
· Snack packs (individually wrapped)
· Individually wrapped cookies
· Nuts
· Sunflower seeds
· Beef jerky
· Gum
· Dried fruit
· Twinkies
· Tuna in pouches
· Other non-perishable items that are fun…NO canned goods!!!
